There are five main components to the whole auto air conditioning system, namely the Compressor, Condenser, Receiver-dryer, Expansion valve, and the Evaporator. Hard tubing and flexible hoses connect all the actual components of the air conditioning in the car. The fluid that passes around the whole system is the refrigerant.

Earlier, R-12 was the refrigerant used in almost all cars. But due to its environmental damaging properties, the refrigerant was discontinued (Banned) . Today, a HCFC called R-134A is widely used. It is harmless to the environment.
